Who are the Master Gardeners?

They have acquired gardening knowledge through experience and from the courses in horticulture they have completed. They are pleased to research topics and questions posed to them by the public.

What is your commitment as a Master Gardener?
To provide a minimum of 30 volunteer hours a year of continuing education at MG meetings and answering gardening questions in various situations. This includes, among other activities, researching and speaking on topics to Horticultural Societies and other interested groups, working at Master Gardener Advice Clinics set up in malls, at home shows, nurseries and garden centers.

How do you become a Master Gardener?
The first step is to fill out the attached application, answer a few questions about your gardening and volunteer background and tell us why you want become a Master Gardener. You will be asked to complete a multiple-choice questionnaire of your general gardening knowledge, followed by an interview with Master Gardeners to answer any questions you may have about the program and explore the responses to the questionnaire you have completed. After the questionnaire and depending on the number of openings the Master Gardener group has, you may be asked to join the group as a Master Gardener in Training (MGIT). Once accepted as a Master Gardener in Training, you must undertake and complete a horticultural correspondence program over a period of two years. An income tax receipt will be issued by the educational institution.

Membership Fees and how the Group is financed.
The Group pays an annual fee based on $25 for each Master Gardener and MGIT to the Master Gardeners of Ontario Inc. to fund the activities of the Provincial organization. We mainly finance our group by lectures, holding plant sales and gardening clinics.

Where and how often do you attend meetings?
Our meetings are held monthly in a meeting room in the Westmount area. Unless otherwise altered the meetings are held every second Wednesday of the month and begin at 7P.M. It is strongly suggested that you attend as many meetings as possible and we advise that prospective members attend a few meetings prior to their completing an application to join.
